Functions of a complex variable Approximation in the complex plane Theorem

Runge's theorem

Builds on Compact setHolomorphic functionRational functionUniform convergence on a setConnected space

Statement

Let K⊆ℂK \subseteq \C be a compact set. Let ff be a holomorphic function on an open set containing KK. Let A⊆ℂ∖KA \subseteq \C \setminus K be a set that contains at least one point of each bounded connected component of ℂ∖K\C \setminus K. Then for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is a rational function rr whose poles all lie in AA such that ∣f(z)−r(z)∣<εfor all z∈K.\abs{f(z) - r(z)} < \varepsilon \quad \text{for all } z \in K. In particular, if ℂ∖K\C \setminus K is connected, then ff is a uniform limit on KK of polynomials.

Remarks

Proof idea: by the Cauchy integral formula over a cycle around KK, ff is a uniform limit on KK of finite sums of terms c/(z−a)c/(z - a) with aa off KK. Each pole aa can then be moved to a point of AA in the same component of ℂ∖K\C \setminus K, by expanding in power series. For the unbounded component, the pole is moved to ∞\infty instead. A pole at ∞\infty means a polynomial.

The hypothesis on AA is necessary. Let KK be the unit circle and f(z)=1/zf(z) = 1/z; the bounded component of ℂ∖K\C \setminus K is the open disc. For every polynomial pp one has ∮Kp(z) dz=0\oint_K p(z) \, dz = 0, while ∮Kz−1 dz=2πi\oint_K z^{-1} \, dz = 2\pi i. If ∣p−1/z∣<ε\abs{p - 1/z} < \varepsilon on KK, then 2π=∣∮K(z−1−p(z)) dz∣≤2πε2\pi = \abs{\oint_K (z^{-1} - p(z)) \, dz} \le 2\pi \varepsilon, which fails for ε<1\varepsilon < 1. With A={0}A = \set{0} the rational function r(z)=1/zr(z) = 1/z itself has its only pole in AA and approximates ff exactly.

Going deeper

For a student

Runge's theorem is the starting point of approximation theory in the complex plane. It is used to build holomorphic functions with prescribed properties, for example sequences of polynomials that converge pointwise on ℂ\C to a discontinuous limit. It gives the existence of solutions of the ∂ˉ\bar\partial-equation and the Mittag-Leffler theorem on general open sets. Mergelyan's theorem strengthens the polynomial case to functions that are only continuous on KK and holomorphic in its interior.
