Definition
Let be a formal power series with complex coefficients, and let be integers. Consider pairs of polynomials with complex coefficients such that:
- has degree at most ;
- is not the zero polynomial and has degree at most ;
- the series has no terms of degree at most , that is, .
Such pairs exist, and the rational function is the same for all of them. This rational function is the Padé approximant of , written .
Remarks
Existence: condition 3 for the coefficients of is a system of homogeneous linear equations in the coefficients of . So a nonzero exists, and then is the truncation of at degree . Uniqueness: for two pairs, is a polynomial of degree at most that is , so it is . Example: for , , take and . Then , so and . Non-example: and satisfy clauses 1 and 2 for , but fails clause 3. For the approximant is the Taylor polynomial of degree . When one usually normalizes , and then ; when the approximant may match fewer coefficients.
