Definition
Let be an interval and let be a function. The function is a Darboux function, or has the intermediate value property, if the following holds. For all in and each real between and , there is with .
Remarks
Equivalently, maps every subinterval of onto an interval. Each continuous function on is a Darboux function, by the intermediate value theorem. Each derivative on an open interval is a Darboux function, by Darboux's theorem.
Example: let for and , on . On a subinterval not containing , is continuous, so its image is an interval. A subinterval with more than one point that contains contains a full period of on one side of , so its image is . So is a Darboux function, although it is not continuous at .
Non-example: the floor function on has and , but it never takes the value .
The Conway base 13 function is a Darboux function that is continuous at no point.
