Maximum and minimum

Definition
Let be a nonempty set, let be a function, and let .
- The function attains its maximum at if for all . Then is the maximum value of , written .
- The function attains its minimum at if for all . Then is the minimum value of , written .
- A point as in 1 or 2 is a global extremum, or absolute extremum, of .
Remarks
The maximum value of is the greatest element of the image , when it exists. Then it equals the supremum of , and the supremum is attained. The maximum value is unique, but it can be attained at several points. For , every global extremum is a local extremum.
Example: on attains its maximum at . Indeed, for one has , so .
Non-example: on has no maximum. For each , the point lies in and . The supremum of is , but it is not a value of . The extreme value theorem gives a maximum and a minimum for every continuous function on a closed bounded interval.

What this page needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
