Statement
Let be a field and let be the field of rational functions in one variable over . Let be a field with . Then for some rational function .
Remarks
Pick and write with coprime polynomials. Then is a root of over , and one shows that . The proof then takes the minimal polynomial of over , chooses among its coefficients not in , and compares degrees to get . Example: lies between and , and the theorem says it is already of the form ; here works, and . The analogue in two variables concerns fields with finite over . It holds over algebraically closed fields of characteristic by Castelnuovo's theorem, and it fails in general in three or more variables.

For a student
The theorem says that a subfield of a purely transcendental extension of transcendence degree is purely transcendental. In geometry, it gives that a unirational curve is rational. The degree formula also computes the degree of a rational map from the line to itself, which is the degree of the field extension .
