Proof of the Gershgorin circle theorem by a largest coordinate
Builds on EigenvalueMatrix multiplicationTriangle inequalityAbsolute value is multiplicativeAbsolute value
Proof
We look at the row of where the eigenvector has its largest coordinate.
- Let be an eigenvalue of . By definition, there is with and .
- Choose an index with for all . Since , some , so .
- By the definition of the matrix product, coordinate of reads .
- Subtract from both sides. This gives .
- Take absolute values. By the multiplicativity of the absolute value and the triangle inequality, .
- By the choice of in step 2, for all . So the right side of step 5 is at most .
- Divide by . This gives .
- So . Since was any eigenvalue, each eigenvalue of lies in at least one of the discs .
Idea
Take an eigenvector and its coordinate of largest size. In that row, the diagonal term must balance the other terms of the row. These other terms are at most times the largest coordinate, so is within of .
