Mittag-Leffler summation

Builds on Summability methodSeriesGamma functionOne-sided limit

Definition

Let ∑k≥0ak\sum_{k \ge 0} a_k be a series of complex numbers, and let Γ\Gamma be the gamma function. For α>0\alpha > 0 put M(α)=∑k≥0akΓ(1+αk)M(\alpha) = \sum_{k \ge 0} \frac{a_k}{\Gamma(1 + \alpha k)} whenever this series converges. The series ∑ak\sum a_k is Mittag-Leffler summable to ss if M(α)M(\alpha) is defined for all small α>0\alpha > 0 and the one-sided limit lim⁡α→0+M(α)\lim_{\alpha \to 0^+} M(\alpha) equals ss.

Remarks

For ak=zka_k = z^k one gets M(α)=∑k≥0zkΓ(1+αk)M(\alpha) = \sum_{k \ge 0} \frac{z^k}{\Gamma(1 + \alpha k)}, the Mittag-Leffler function Eα(z)E_\alpha(z).

Example: let ∑ak\sum a_k converge absolutely to ss. Since Γ(x)≥12\Gamma(x) \ge \frac12 for all x≥1x \ge 1, one has ∣ak/Γ(1+αk)∣≤2∣ak∣\abs{a_k / \Gamma(1 + \alpha k)} \le 2 \abs{a_k} for all α\alpha and kk. Each term tends to aka_k as α→0+\alpha \to 0^+, so by dominated convergence for series M(α)→sM(\alpha) \to s.

Non-example: for 1+1+1+⋯1 + 1 + 1 + \cdots, the terms 1/Γ(1+αk)1/\Gamma(1 + \alpha k) are positive and tend to 11 for each kk. So for each NN, M(α)≥∑k=0N1Γ(1+αk)→N+1M(\alpha) \ge \sum_{k=0}^{N} \frac{1}{\Gamma(1 + \alpha k)} \to N + 1 as α→0+\alpha \to 0^+, and M(α)M(\alpha) has no finite limit.
