Definition

Let GG be a group. A maximal subgroup of GG is a subgroup M≠GM \ne G such that no subgroup HH satisfies M<H<GM < H < G. The Frattini subgroup Φ(G)\Phi(G) is the intersection of all maximal subgroups of GG, with Φ(G)=G\Phi(G) = G when GG has no maximal subgroup.

Remarks

An element g∈Gg \in G is a non-generator if, for every subset X⊆GX \subseteq G with ⟨X,g⟩=G\langle X, g \rangle = G, already ⟨X⟩=G\langle X \rangle = G. Then Φ(G)\Phi(G) is the set of non-generators of GG. Φ(G)\Phi(G) is a characteristic subgroup of GG, and if GG is finite it is nilpotent. For a finite pp-group PP, Φ(P)\Phi(P) is generated by the pp-th powers and the commutators, and P/Φ(P)P/\Phi(P) is an elementary abelian group.

Example: G=ℤ/8ℤG = \Z/8\Z. Its subgroups form a chain {0}<{0,4}<{0,2,4,6}<G\set{0} < \set{0, 4} < \set{0, 2, 4, 6} < G, so the only maximal subgroup is {0,2,4,6}\set{0, 2, 4, 6}, and this is Φ(G)\Phi(G).

Example: G=S3G = S_3. The maximal subgroups are A3A_3 and the three subgroups of order 22; their intersection is trivial, so Φ(S3)={e}\Phi(S_3) = \set{e}.

Example: the group ℚ\Q of rational numbers under addition has no maximal subgroup, so Φ(ℚ)=ℚ\Phi(\Q) = \Q.

Non-example: in ℤ/8ℤ\Z/8\Z, the subgroup {0,4}\set{0, 4} is not the Frattini subgroup, since it is smaller than the intersection of the maximal subgroups.

Do not confuse Φ(G)\Phi(G) with the Frattini argument, which is a different result named after the same mathematician.
