Proof of the universal property of the product topology
Builds on Product topology on an arbitrary productSubbasisTopological spaceContinuous map of topological spacesComposition of continuous maps is continuousPreimage of a setFunction composition
Proof
We prove the two directions separately. Let be the product topology on , and let .
- By definition, is the topology generated by the subbasis . In particular .
- Each projection is continuous. Indeed, for open in , the preimage is in .
- Let be continuous. Then each is a composition of continuous maps, so it is continuous.
- Conversely, let each be continuous. Let be the set of all such that is open in .
- We check that is a topology on . First, and are open in . So .
- For a family in , , a union of open sets of . So .
- For , , which is open in . So .
- Let and open in . Then , by the definition of the composition. This set is open in , so .
- So is a topology on that contains . Since is the smallest such topology, .
- Thus is open in for each , and is continuous.
Idea
The sets whose preimages under are open always form a topology, because preimages respect unions and intersections. If the coordinate maps are continuous, this topology contains the subbasis of the product topology. It then contains the whole product topology, which is the smallest topology containing that subbasis.
