Proof of the universal property of the quotient topology
Builds on Quotient topologyContinuous map of topological spacesComposition of continuous maps is continuousPreimage of a setFunction composition
Proof
We prove the two directions separately. Let be the topology of .
- The quotient map is continuous. Indeed, if is open in , then by the definition of the quotient topology.
- Let be continuous. Then is a composition of continuous maps, so it is continuous.
- Conversely, let be continuous, and let be open in .
- By the definition of the composition, if and only if . This holds if and only if , that is, .
- So the preimages agree: . This set is in because is continuous.
- By the definition of the quotient topology, is open in .
- So the preimage under of each open set of is open, and is continuous.
Idea
A set in the quotient is open exactly when its preimage under is open. The preimage under of is the preimage of under . So continuity of is exactly what is needed for .
