Definition

Let XX be a Banach space over ℝ\R or ℂ\C, and let T ⁣:X→XT \colon X \to X be a continuous linear map. Write T0=IT^0 = I, the identity map of XX. The exponential of TT is the bounded operator eT=exp⁡(T)=∑n=0∞Tnn!,e^T = \exp(T) = \sum_{n=0}^{\infty} \frac{T^n}{n!}, where the series converges in operator norm.

Remarks

The series converges because ∥Tn/n!∥≤∥T∥n/n!\norm{T^n / n!} \le \norm{T}^n / n!, and the numbers ∥T∥n/n!\norm{T}^n / n! have the finite sum e∥T∥e^{\norm{T}}; see absolutely convergent series in a Banach space converge. This also gives ∥eT∥≤e∥T∥\norm{e^T} \le e^{\norm{T}}.

Example: let DD be the diagonal operator D(xn)=(λnxn)D(x_n) = (\lambda_n x_n) on ℓ2\ell^2, with (λn)(\lambda_n) a bounded sequence of complex numbers. Then Dk(xn)=(λnkxn)D^k(x_n) = (\lambda_n^k x_n), so summing coordinatewise gives eD(xn)=(eλnxn)e^D(x_n) = (e^{\lambda_n} x_n).

For X=ℂnX = \C^n, the definition gives the matrix exponential. If ST=TSST = TS, then eS+T=eSeTe^{S + T} = e^S e^T; in particular eTe^T is invertible with inverse e−Te^{-T}. The identity eS+T=eSeTe^{S+T} = e^S e^T can fail when SS and TT do not commute, already for 2×22 \times 2 matrices. The map t↦etTt \mapsto e^{tT} from ℝ\R to bounded operators is differentiable in operator norm, with derivative TetTT e^{tT}.
