Proof of the irrationality of the square root of a prime
Builds on Irrational numberSquare rootFraction in lowest termsEuclid's lemmaPrime numberGreatest common divisorDivisibility
Proof
We argue by contradiction, as in the proof for . Let be a prime number. Since , the square root is a real number with .
- Suppose that is not irrational, that is, is rational.
- By the existence of a fraction in lowest terms, with integers and , and .
- Squaring gives . Multiplying by gives .
- So divides . By Euclid's lemma, divides . Write with an integer.
- Then . Since , dividing by gives .
- So divides , and Euclid's lemma gives .
- Thus is a common divisor of and . By the definition of the greatest common divisor, .
- This contradicts . So is irrational.
Idea
If in lowest terms, then . Because is prime, must divide , and then must divide as well. This contradicts the choice of lowest terms.
