Functions of a complex variable Definition
Schwarzian derivative
Builds on Holomorphic functionDomain in the complex planeMöbius transformation
Definition
Let be a domain, and let be holomorphic with for all . The Schwarzian derivative of is the holomorphic function given by
Remarks
Other notations are and . The two expressions agree, since . Example: for on , , so . For a Möbius transformation with , one gets ; conversely on a domain only for restrictions of Möbius maps. Non-example: on has , so it is excluded; indeed on has a pole at . The chain rule is , so for every Möbius . The definition extends to locally injective meromorphic functions, with holomorphic, since .
