Definition

Let U⊆ℂU \subseteq \C be a domain and let ff be holomorphic on UU. A point ζ\zeta of the boundary ∂U\partial U is a regular point of ff if the following holds. There are an open disc BB centered at ζ\zeta and a holomorphic function gg on BB such that g=fg = f on some connected component of B∩UB \cap U. That component must have ζ\zeta in its closure. The boundary ∂U\partial U is a natural boundary of ff if no point of ∂U\partial U is a regular point of ff.

Remarks

The most common case is a power series with radius of convergence RR, with UU its open disc of convergence. On the circle of convergence there is always at least one point that is not regular. Example: f(z)=∑n≥0z2nf(z) = \sum_{n \ge 0} z^{2^n} on the unit disc has the unit circle as natural boundary. If ζ2k=1\zeta^{2^k} = 1, then f(rζ)=∑n<k(rζ)2n+∑n≥kr2n→∞f(r\zeta) = \sum_{n < k} (r\zeta)^{2^n} + \sum_{n \ge k} r^{2^n} \to \infty as r→1−r \to 1^-. Such ζ\zeta are dense in the circle, while ff would be bounded near a regular point. Non-example: 11−z=∑n≥0zn\frac{1}{1 - z} = \sum_{n \ge 0} z^n does not have the unit circle as natural boundary. Each point ζ≠1\zeta \neq 1 with ∣ζ∣=1\abs{\zeta} = 1 is regular, since 11−z\frac{1}{1 - z} is holomorphic on a disc around ζ\zeta.
