Proof

  1. Let U⊆ℂU \subseteq \C be open, let f:U→ℂf : U \to \C be holomorphic, and let z0∈Uz_0 \in U with f′(z0)≠0f'(z_0) \ne 0. Identify ℂ\C with ℝ2\R^2 by x+iy↔(x,y)x + iy \leftrightarrow (x, y).
  2. Since ff is holomorphic, it is complex differentiable at z0z_0. Write a=f′(z0)a = f'(z_0) and a=α+iβa = \alpha + i\beta with α,β∈ℝ\alpha, \beta \in \R.
  3. Let L:ℝ2→ℝ2L : \R^2 \to \R^2 be the map L(h)=ahL(h) = a h, a product of complex numbers. It is ℝ\R-linear, because complex multiplication distributes over sums and commutes with real scalars.
  4. For h≠0h \ne 0 with z0+h∈Uz_0 + h \in U, we have ∣f(z0+h)−f(z0)−ah∣∣h∣=∣f(z0+h)−f(z0)h−a∣\frac{\abs{f(z_0 + h) - f(z_0) - a h}}{\abs{h}} = \abs{\frac{f(z_0 + h) - f(z_0)}{h} - a}. Here ∣⋅∣\abs{\cdot} is the modulus, which is the Euclidean norm on ℝ2\R^2.
  5. By step 2, the right side of step 4 tends to 00 as h→0h \to 0. So ff is differentiable at z0z_0 as a map from an open subset of ℝ2\R^2 to ℝ2\R^2, with derivative LL.
  6. Write f=u+ivf = u + iv with u,vu, v real valued. Restricting hh in step 2 to real numbers t≠0t \ne 0 gives lim⁡t→0f(z0+t)−f(z0)t=a\lim_{t \to 0} \frac{f(z_0 + t) - f(z_0)}{t} = a.
  7. Taking real and imaginary parts in step 6 gives the partial derivatives ux(z0)=αu_x(z_0) = \alpha and vx(z0)=βv_x(z_0) = \beta.
  8. Restricting hh in step 2 to h=ith = it with real t≠0t \ne 0 gives lim⁡t→0f(z0+it)−f(z0)t=ia=−β+iα\lim_{t \to 0} \frac{f(z_0 + it) - f(z_0)}{t} = i a = -\beta + i\alpha.
  9. Taking real and imaginary parts in step 8 gives uy(z0)=−βu_y(z_0) = -\beta and vy(z0)=αv_y(z_0) = \alpha.
  10. By steps 7 and 9, the Jacobian matrix of ff at z0z_0 is J=(α−ββα).J = \begin{pmatrix} \alpha & -\beta \\ \beta & \alpha \end{pmatrix}.
  11. Let λ=∣a∣=α2+β2\lambda = \abs{a} = \sqrt{\alpha^2 + \beta^2}. Since a≠0a \ne 0, we have λ>0\lambda > 0.
  12. Let Q=λ−1JQ = \lambda^{-1} J, so J=λQJ = \lambda Q. Then QTQ=λ−2(α2+β200α2+β2)=I2Q^T Q = \lambda^{-2} \begin{pmatrix} \alpha^2 + \beta^2 & 0 \\ 0 & \alpha^2 + \beta^2 \end{pmatrix} = I_2, so QQ is orthogonal.
  13. Also det⁡Q=λ−2(α2+β2)=1\det Q = \lambda^{-2}(\alpha^2 + \beta^2) = 1. So QQ is a rotation matrix.
  14. By steps 5, 10, 12 and 13, ff is conformal at z0z_0.
  15. If f′(z)≠0f'(z) \ne 0 for each z∈Uz \in U, then steps 1 to 14 apply at each z∈Uz \in U. So ff is conformal on UU.

Idea

The complex derivative says that near z0z_0 the map ff is close to multiplication by the number a=f′(z0)a = f'(z_0). As a real linear map, multiplication by aa has the matrix with rows (α,−β)(\alpha, -\beta) and (β,α)(\beta, \alpha). This matrix is ∣a∣\abs{a} times a rotation, which is exactly the definition of conformal.
