Proof of the limit of the cumulative distribution function at infinity

Builds on Cumulative distribution functionRandom variableContinuity of probability measuresMonotonicity of the cumulative distribution functionThe reals are ArchimedeanEpsilon-N definition of the limit of a sequence

Proof

  1. Let XX be a real random variable on a probability space (Ω,ℱ,P)(\Omega, \mathcal{F}, P), with cumulative distribution function FX(t)=P(X≤t)F_X(t) = P(X \le t).
  2. For each integer n≥1n \ge 1 let An={X≤n}A_n = \set{X \le n}. It is an event, because (−∞,n](-\infty, n] is a Borel set, and P(An)=FX(n)P(A_n) = F_X(n).
  3. The events increase: if X(ω)≤nX(\omega) \le n, then X(ω)≤n+1X(\omega) \le n + 1. So An⊆An+1A_n \subseteq A_{n+1}.
  4. Their union is Ω\Omega. Let ω∈Ω\omega \in \Omega. The value X(ω)X(\omega) is a real number, so by the Archimedean property there is n≥1n \ge 1 with n>X(ω)n > X(\omega). Then ω∈An\omega \in A_n.
  5. By continuity from below, FX(n)=P(An)→P(Ω)=1F_X(n) = P(A_n) \to P(\Omega) = 1 as n→∞n \to \infty.
  6. Let ε>0\varepsilon > 0. By the ε-N form of the limit and step 5, there is an integer N≥1N \ge 1 with ∣FX(N)−1∣<ε\abs{F_X(N) - 1} < \varepsilon, that is, FX(N)>1−εF_X(N) > 1 - \varepsilon.
  7. Let x≥Nx \ge N. The function FXF_X is nondecreasing, so FX(x)≥FX(N)>1−εF_X(x) \ge F_X(N) > 1 - \varepsilon. Also FX(x)≤1F_X(x) \le 1, because FX(x)F_X(x) is a probability.
  8. So ∣FX(x)−1∣<ε\abs{F_X(x) - 1} < \varepsilon for all x≥Nx \ge N. Since ε>0\varepsilon > 0 was arbitrary, lim⁡x→+∞FX(x)=1\lim_{x \to +\infty} F_X(x) = 1.

Idea

The events {X≤n}\set{X \le n} grow and eventually catch every outcome, because XX takes only real values. Continuity from below makes their probabilities tend to 11. Monotonicity of FXF_X then carries the limit from the integers to all real xx.
