Definition

Let SS be a closed, connected, oriented topological surface of genus g≥0g \ge 0. A marked Riemann surface of type SS is a pair (X,f)(X, f), where XX is a Riemann surface and f ⁣:S→Xf \colon S \to X is an orientation-preserving homeomorphism. Two marked Riemann surfaces (X,f)(X, f) and (Y,h)(Y, h) are equivalent if there is a biholomorphism φ ⁣:X→Y\varphi \colon X \to Y such that φ∘f\varphi \circ f is isotopic to hh. The Teichmüller space T(S)T(S) is the set of equivalence classes of marked Riemann surfaces of type SS. It depends up to natural bijection only on gg and is written TgT_g.

Remarks

Riemann surfaces carry their orientation from the complex structure, which is why the marking is required to preserve orientation. TgT_g carries a natural complete metric, the Teichmüller metric, defined from the least dilatation of quasiconformal maps between marked surfaces. For g≥2g \ge 2, TgT_g is a complex manifold of dimension 3g−33g - 3, homeomorphic to ℝ6g−6\R^{6g - 6}; T0T_0 is a point. The mapping class group of SS acts on T(S)T(S) by changing the marking, and the quotient is the moduli space MgM_g.

Example: g=1g = 1. For τ\tau in the upper half-plane let Xτ=ℂ/(ℤ+τℤ)X_\tau = \C / (\Z + \tau \Z). Mark it by the homeomorphism fτf_\tau from the standard torus ℝ2/ℤ2\R^2/\Z^2 induced by the real linear map sending (1,0)(1, 0) to 11 and (0,1)(0, 1) to τ\tau. Every marked torus is equivalent to exactly one such (Xτ,fτ)(X_\tau, f_\tau), so T1T_1 is identified with the upper half-plane.

Non-example: a pair (X,f)(X, f) with ff orientation-reversing is not a marked Riemann surface, so it is not a point of T(S)T(S).
