Proof of the addition rule for two events
Builds on Probability spaceEventSigma-algebraMonotonicity of probability
Proof
- Let be a probability space and let be events.
- The sets and are in , because is a σ-algebra.
- We have . By monotonicity of probability, .
- A point of that is not in lies in . So .
- We have . By monotonicity of probability again, .
- A point of lies outside exactly when it lies outside . So .
- By steps 3 to 6, both differences equal . So .
- Adding to both sides gives . Subtracting from both sides gives the equivalent form.
Idea
The part of outside can be measured in two ways. It is what adds to , and it is what remains of after removing . Equating the two measurements gives the rule.
