Definition

Let ff be a meromorphic function on ℂ\C that is not constant, and write log⁡+x=max⁡(log⁡x,0)\log^+ x = \max(\log x, 0) for x≥0x \ge 0, with log⁡+0=0\log^+ 0 = 0. Nevanlinna theory studies ff through the following functions of r>0r > 0, for aa in the Riemann sphere ℂ∪{∞}\C \cup \set{\infty}.

  1. The number n(t,a)n(t, a) of solutions of f(z)=af(z) = a in the disc ∣z∣≤t\abs{z} \le t, counted with multiplicity; for a=∞a = \infty these are the poles of ff. The number n‾(t,a)\overline{n}(t, a) counts the same points without multiplicity.
  2. The counting function N(r,a)=∫0rn(t,a)−n(0,a)t dt+n(0,a)log⁡rN(r, a) = \int_0^r \dfrac{n(t, a) - n(0, a)}{t} \, dt + n(0, a) \log r, and N‾(r,a)\overline{N}(r, a) defined in the same way from n‾\overline{n}.
  3. The proximity function m(r,a)=12π∫02πlog⁡+1∣f(reiθ)−a∣ dθm(r, a) = \dfrac{1}{2\pi} \displaystyle\int_0^{2\pi} \log^+ \frac{1}{\abs{f(re^{i\theta}) - a}} \, d\theta for a∈ℂa \in \C, and m(r,∞)=12π∫02πlog⁡+∣f(reiθ)∣ dθm(r, \infty) = \dfrac{1}{2\pi} \displaystyle\int_0^{2\pi} \log^+ \abs{f(re^{i\theta})} \, d\theta.
  4. The Nevanlinna characteristic T(r,f)=m(r,∞)+N(r,∞)T(r, f) = m(r, \infty) + N(r, \infty).
  5. The defect δ(a)=lim inf⁡r→∞m(r,a)T(r,f)\delta(a) = \liminf_{r \to \infty} \dfrac{m(r, a)}{T(r, f)}, using the limit inferior.

Remarks

Example: for f(z)=ezf(z) = e^z there are no poles and no zeros, so N(r,∞)=N(r,0)=0N(r, \infty) = N(r, 0) = 0. The proximity functions are m(r,∞)=m(r,0)=12π∫02πmax⁡(rcos⁡θ,0) dθ=r/πm(r, \infty) = m(r, 0) = \frac{1}{2\pi}\int_0^{2\pi} \max(r \cos\theta, 0) \, d\theta = r/\pi, so T(r,ez)=r/πT(r, e^z) = r/\pi and δ(0)=δ(∞)=1\delta(0) = \delta(\infty) = 1. For a value a≠0,∞a \ne 0, \infty, the solutions of ez=ae^z = a have n(t,a)∼t/πn(t, a) \sim t/\pi, so N(r,a)∼r/πN(r, a) \sim r/\pi and δ(a)=0\delta(a) = 0. By the first main theorem, δ(a)=1−lim sup⁡r→∞N(r,a)/T(r,f)\delta(a) = 1 - \limsup_{r \to \infty} N(r, a)/T(r, f) when ff is transcendental, and 0≤δ(a)≤10 \le \delta(a) \le 1. A value that ff omits has defect 11.
