Definition

Let U⊆ℂU \subseteq \C be an open set. A function f ⁣:U→ℂf \colon U \to \C is univalent on UU if it is holomorphic on UU and injective on UU.

The class SS is the set of univalent functions ff on the unit disc 𝔻\mathbb{D} with f(0)=0f(0) = 0 and f′(0)=1f'(0) = 1, so that f(z)=z+∑n≥2anznf(z) = z + \sum_{n \ge 2} a_n z^n.

Remarks

A univalent function has f′(z)≠0f'(z) \ne 0 for all z∈Uz \in U, and its inverse f−1 ⁣:f(U)→Uf^{-1} \colon f(U) \to U is holomorphic. Example: f(z)=ezf(z) = e^z on the strip {z:∣Im⁡z∣<π}\set{z : \abs{\operatorname{Im} z} < \pi}; if ez=ewe^z = e^w then z−w∈2πiℤz - w \in 2\pi i\Z, and two points of the strip differ in imaginary part by less than 2π2\pi, so z=wz = w. Non-example: eze^z on all of ℂ\C is holomorphic but not injective, since e0=e2πie^{0} = e^{2\pi i}. Non-example: z↦z2z \mapsto z^2 on 𝔻\mathbb{D} is not univalent, though it is injective near every point except 00. The converse of the first remark fails: f′≠0f' \ne 0 only gives local injectivity, as eze^z on ℂ\C shows. Some authors also call injective meromorphic functions univalent; then the class Σ\Sigma of univalent functions g(z)=z+b0+b1z−1+⋯g(z) = z + b_0 + b_1 z^{-1} + \cdots on {∣z∣>1}\set{\abs{z} > 1} is studied together with SS. The German term schlicht is used with the same meaning.
