Elliptic function
Builds on Meromorphic functionPeriodic function
Definition
Let be linearly independent over , and let be the lattice they span. An elliptic function for is a meromorphic function on such that for all that are not poles of . A function is elliptic if it is elliptic with respect to some such lattice.
Remarks
Then for every , so is periodic with each lattice vector as a period. A fundamental parallelogram is a set with ; an elliptic function is determined by its values there. Example: the Weierstrass elliptic function of is elliptic with respect to , and so is its derivative . Constant functions are elliptic for every lattice. Non-example: is meromorphic and periodic, but its periods are exactly the numbers with . They all lie on one line through , so there is no second period independent over . Equivalently, the elliptic functions for are the meromorphic functions on the compact Riemann surface .
