Proof
We first separate a point from a compact set, and then a compact set from a compact set.
- Let be disjoint closed sets. The subspace topology on as a subset of itself is its own topology, so is a compact set in .
- By closed subsets of compact sets are compact, and are compact.
- Claim: if is compact and , there are disjoint open and . If , take and .
- Let . For each , we have . Since is Hausdorff, choose disjoint open sets and .
- The open sets , for , cover . By compactness via open covers, there are with .
- Let and . Both are open by the axioms of a topology. Also and .
- If , then for some and . This contradicts . So , and the claim holds.
- Now separate and . If , take and . Let .
- For each , we have . Step 3 with gives disjoint open sets and .
- The open sets , for , cover . By compactness of , there are with .
- Let and . Both are open, and .
- If , then for some and , which contradicts . So .
- Hence is normal.
Idea
The Hausdorff property separates two points. Compactness upgrades this, one finite cover at a time: first a point from a compact set, then a compact set from a compact set. Closed sets of a compact space are compact, so this separates any two disjoint closed sets.

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 40 pages in order. The foundations come first. The path takes the proofs Proof that compactness of a subset can be tested with open sets of the ambient space, Proof that closed subsets of compact sets are compact.
