General topology Proof

Proof that a product of compact sets is compact by the tube lemma

Builds on Compactness via open coversProduct topologyBasis of a topologyTopological space

Proof

We use the open cover condition and the tube lemma argument.

  1. Let (Wj)j∈J(W_j)_{j \in J} be open subsets of X×YX \times Y with K×L⊆⋃j∈JWjK \times L \subseteq \bigcup_{j \in J} W_j. By compactness via open covers, we must cover K×LK \times L by finitely many WjW_j.
  2. If KK or LL is empty, then K×LK \times L is empty, and the empty subfamily covers it. From now on let KK and LL be nonempty.
  3. Let (x,y)∈K×L(x, y) \in K \times L, and choose j(x,y)∈Jj(x, y) \in J with (x,y)∈Wj(x,y)(x, y) \in W_{j(x, y)}.
  4. The sets U×VU \times V with UU open in XX and VV open in YY form a basis of the product topology. So there are open Ux,y⊆XU_{x, y} \subseteq X and Vx,y⊆YV_{x, y} \subseteq Y with (x,y)∈Ux,y×Vx,y⊆Wj(x,y)(x, y) \in U_{x, y} \times V_{x, y} \subseteq W_{j(x, y)}.
  5. Fix x∈Kx \in K. The open sets Vx,yV_{x, y}, for y∈Ly \in L, cover LL, since y∈Vx,yy \in V_{x, y}.
  6. Since LL is compact, there are y1,…,ym∈Ly_1, \ldots, y_m \in L with L⊆Vx,y1∪⋯∪Vx,ymL \subseteq V_{x, y_1} \cup \cdots \cup V_{x, y_m}. Here m≥1m \ge 1, because LL is nonempty.
  7. Let Tx=Ux,y1∩⋯∩Ux,ymT_x = U_{x, y_1} \cap \cdots \cap U_{x, y_m}. It is open in XX by the axioms of a topology, and it contains xx.
  8. Let Jx={j(x,y1),…,j(x,ym)}J_x = \set{j(x, y_1), \ldots, j(x, y_m)}, a finite subset of JJ. Claim: Tx×L⊆⋃j∈JxWjT_x \times L \subseteq \bigcup_{j \in J_x} W_j. Let (a,b)∈Tx×L(a, b) \in T_x \times L. By step 6, b∈Vx,ykb \in V_{x, y_k} for some kk.
  9. Also a∈Tx⊆Ux,yka \in T_x \subseteq U_{x, y_k}. So (a,b)∈Ux,yk×Vx,yk⊆Wj(x,yk)(a, b) \in U_{x, y_k} \times V_{x, y_k} \subseteq W_{j(x, y_k)} by step 4. This proves the claim.
  10. The open sets TxT_x, for x∈Kx \in K, cover KK. Since KK is compact, there are x1,…,xp∈Kx_1, \ldots, x_p \in K with K⊆Tx1∪⋯∪TxpK \subseteq T_{x_1} \cup \cdots \cup T_{x_p}.
  11. Let (a,b)∈K×L(a, b) \in K \times L. Then a∈Txla \in T_{x_l} for some ll, so (a,b)∈Txl×L(a, b) \in T_{x_l} \times L.
  12. By step 8, (a,b)∈Wj(a, b) \in W_j for some j∈Jxlj \in J_{x_l}.
  13. So the sets WjW_j with jj in the finite set Jx1∪⋯∪JxpJ_{x_1} \cup \cdots \cup J_{x_p} cover K×LK \times L. By step 1, K×LK \times L is compact.

Idea

For a fixed xx, the slice {x}×L\set{x} \times L is a copy of the compact set LL, so finitely many basic boxes cover it. Their first factors meet in an open set TxT_x, which gives a whole tube Tx×LT_x \times L covered by finitely many sets. Compactness of KK then needs only finitely many tubes.
