Group theory and generalizations Proof
Proof of the order of the symmetric group
Builds on Symmetric groupPermutationOrder of a groupNumber of permutations
Proof
- Let be a positive integer and let , a set with elements.
- By the definition of the symmetric group, is the set of all bijections from to .
- These bijections are exactly the permutations of .
- By the number of permutations, has exactly permutations.
- The order of is the number of its elements. By steps 2 to 4, it is .
Idea
The group is just the set of permutations of symbols with composition. So its order is the number of such permutations, which is by a counting argument. The image of has choices, the image of then has choices, and so on.
