Proof

  1. Let RR be a ring and let I⊆JI \subseteq J be two-sided ideals of RR. Put J/I={a+I:a∈J}J/I = \set{a + I : a \in J}, a subset of the quotient ring R/IR/I.
  2. For an ideal LL and a,b∈Ra, b \in R, a+L=b+La + L = b + L if and only if a−b∈La - b \in L. Indeed, if the cosets are equal, then a∈b+La \in b + L. Conversely, if a−b=x∈La - b = x \in L, then a+y=b+(x+y)a + y = b + (x + y) and b+y=a+(y−x)b + y = a + (y - x) for each y∈Ly \in L.
  3. The set J/IJ/I contains 0+I0 + I, since 0∈J0 \in J. For a,b∈Ja, b \in J, (a+I)−(b+I)=(a−b)+I(a + I) - (b + I) = (a - b) + I lies in J/IJ/I, since a−b∈Ja - b \in J. So J/IJ/I is an additive subgroup of R/IR/I.
  4. For r∈Rr \in R and a∈Ja \in J, (r+I)(a+I)=ra+I(r + I)(a + I) = r a + I and (a+I)(r+I)=ar+I(a + I)(r + I) = a r + I. Both lie in J/IJ/I, since ra,ar∈Jr a, a r \in J. So J/IJ/I is a two-sided ideal of R/IR/I.
  5. Let ρ ⁣:R→R/J\rho \colon R \to R/J, ρ(a)=a+J\rho(a) = a + J. By the definition of the operations of R/JR/J, ρ\rho is a ring homomorphism. By step 2, its kernel is JJ.
  6. Since I⊆J=ker⁡ρI \subseteq J = \ker \rho, the universal property of the quotient ring gives a ring homomorphism ψ ⁣:R/I→R/J\psi \colon R/I \to R/J with ψ(a+I)=a+J\psi(a + I) = a + J.
  7. The map ψ\psi is surjective, because each a+Ja + J equals ψ(a+I)\psi(a + I).
  8. The kernel of ψ\psi is J/IJ/I. First, if a∈Ja \in J, then ψ(a+I)=a+J=0+J\psi(a + I) = a + J = 0 + J by step 2.
  9. Conversely, let ψ(a+I)=0+J\psi(a + I) = 0 + J. Then a∈Ja \in J by step 2, so a+I∈J/Ia + I \in J/I.
  10. By the first isomorphism theorem applied to ψ\psi, with steps 7 to 9, the map (R/I)/(J/I)→R/J(R/I)/(J/I) \to R/J, (a+I)+J/I↦ψ(a+I)=a+J(a + I) + J/I \mapsto \psi(a + I) = a + J, is a ring isomorphism.

Idea

Reducing modulo JJ kills everything in II, so it factors through R/IR/I. The resulting map R/I→R/JR/I \to R/J is onto, and it kills exactly the cosets of elements of JJ. The first isomorphism theorem turns this into the isomorphism.
