Proof that a function is surjective iff it has a right inverse

Builds on Surjective functionRight inverseAxiom of choiceChoice functionPreimage of a setFunctionFunction compositionIdentity function

Proof

We prove the two directions separately. Only the second direction uses the axiom of choice.

  1. Let f ⁣:A→Bf \colon A \to B be a function.
  2. First suppose that ff has a right inverse h ⁣:B→Ah \colon B \to A. So f(h(b))=bf(h(b)) = b for each b∈Bb \in B.
  3. Let b∈Bb \in B and put a=h(b)∈Aa = h(b) \in A. By step 2, f(a)=bf(a) = b. So ff is surjective.
  4. Now suppose that ff is surjective. For b∈Bb \in B, let Fb=f−1({b})={a∈A∣f(a)=b}F_b = f^{-1}(\set{b}) = \set{a \in A \mid f(a) = b} be the preimage of {b}\set{b}.
  5. Since ff is surjective, each FbF_b is nonempty. Let X={Fb∣b∈B}X = \set{F_b \mid b \in B}. Then XX is a set of nonempty sets.
  6. By the axiom of choice, there is a choice function c ⁣:X→⋃Xc \colon X \to \bigcup X with c(S)∈Sc(S) \in S for each S∈XS \in X.
  7. Each FbF_b is a subset of AA, so ⋃X⊆A\bigcup X \subseteq A. Define h ⁣:B→Ah \colon B \to A by h(b)=c(Fb)h(b) = c(F_b).
  8. Let b∈Bb \in B. By step 6, h(b)=c(Fb)∈Fbh(b) = c(F_b) \in F_b. By the definition of FbF_b, this says f(h(b))=bf(h(b)) = b.
  9. By step 8, f∘h=idBf \circ h = \mathrm{id}_B, where idB\mathrm{id}_B is the identity function and ∘\circ is composition. So hh is a right inverse of ff.
  10. By steps 3 and 9, ff is surjective if and only if ff has a right inverse.

Idea

A right inverse must pick, for each bb, one point of AA that ff sends to bb. Surjectivity says such points exist, and the axiom of choice lets us pick one for every bb at once. Conversely, the picked point h(b)h(b) shows that bb is hit.
