Proof that the minimal polynomial divides every annihilating polynomial

Builds on Minimal polynomialAnnihilating polynomialPolynomial of an endomorphismDivision algorithm for polynomialsMonic polynomial

Proof

We divide with remainder and use the minimality of the degree.

  1. Let mTm_T be the minimal polynomial of TT. It is monic, and it satisfies mT(T)=0m_T(T) = 0. No nonzero polynomial of smaller degree annihilates TT, since such a polynomial could be scaled to a monic one.
  2. Let p∈F[x]p \in F[x] with p(T)=0p(T) = 0, so pp is an annihilating polynomial of TT.
  3. By the division algorithm for polynomials, applied with the monic divisor mTm_T, there are q,r∈F[x]q, r \in F[x] with p=qmT+rp = q m_T + r and deg⁡r<deg⁡mT\deg r < \deg m_T.
  4. The map f↦f(T)f \mapsto f(T) of evaluation at TT respects sums and products, because powers of TT commute with each other. So p(T)=q(T)mT(T)+r(T)p(T) = q(T) m_T(T) + r(T).
  5. Since p(T)=0p(T) = 0 and mT(T)=0m_T(T) = 0, step 4 gives r(T)=0r(T) = 0.
  6. If r≠0r \ne 0, then rr would be a nonzero annihilating polynomial with deg⁡r<deg⁡mT\deg r < \deg m_T. This contradicts step 1.
  7. Hence r=0r = 0 and p=qmTp = q m_T. So mTm_T divides pp.

Idea

Divide pp by mTm_T. The remainder still kills TT, but it has smaller degree than mTm_T. The minimal polynomial has the least degree among nonzero annihilating polynomials, so the remainder must be zero.
