Definition

Let MM and KK be real symmetric n×nn \times n matrices with MM positive definite, and consider the forced linear system Mx¨+Kx=f(t),M \ddot x + K x = f(t), with a continuous force f ⁣:ℝ→ℝnf \colon \R \to \R^n. Let v1,…,vnv_1, \ldots, v_n be a basis of ℝn\R^n and λ1,…,λn\lambda_1, \ldots, \lambda_n real numbers with Kvk=λkMvk,vjTMvk=δjk;K v_k = \lambda_k M v_k, \qquad v_j^T M v_k = \delta_{jk}; the vkv_k are the mode shapes of the normal modes. Modal analysis is the change of variables x(t)=∑k=1nηk(t) vkx(t) = \sum_{k=1}^n \eta_k(t) \, v_k; the functions ηk\eta_k are the modal coordinates, and they satisfy the decoupled equations η¨k+λkηk=vkTf(t),k=1,…,n.\ddot \eta_k + \lambda_k \eta_k = v_k^T f(t), \qquad k = 1, \ldots, n.

Remarks

Such a basis exists by simultaneous diagonalisation of the symmetric matrices MM and KK, with MM positive definite. The decoupled equations follow by substituting xx into the system and multiplying on the left by vkTv_k^T. If KK is positive semidefinite, λk=ωk2≥0\lambda_k = \omega_k^2 \ge 0 with natural frequencies ωk\omega_k. With a damping matrix CC, the equations decouple in the same way when vjTCvk=0v_j^T C v_k = 0 for j≠kj \ne k, for example for proportional damping C=αM+βKC = \alpha M + \beta K.

Example: M=I2M = I_2, K=(2−1−12)K = \begin{pmatrix} 2 & -1 \\ -1 & 2 \end{pmatrix}, v1=12(1,1)v_1 = \frac{1}{\sqrt 2}(1, 1), v2=12(1,−1)v_2 = \frac{1}{\sqrt 2}(1, -1), λ1=1\lambda_1 = 1, λ2=3\lambda_2 = 3. The modal coordinates η1=(x1+x2)/2\eta_1 = (x_1 + x_2)/\sqrt 2 and η2=(x1−x2)/2\eta_2 = (x_1 - x_2)/\sqrt 2 satisfy η¨1+η1=(f1+f2)/2\ddot \eta_1 + \eta_1 = (f_1 + f_2)/\sqrt 2 and η¨2+3η2=(f1−f2)/2\ddot \eta_2 + 3 \eta_2 = (f_1 - f_2)/\sqrt 2.

Non-example: the standard basis e1,e2e_1, e_2 in the same system is not a basis of mode shapes, since Ke1=(2,−1)TK e_1 = (2, -1)^T is not a multiple of e1e_1. In these coordinates the equations stay coupled.
