Definition

Let MM and KK be real symmetric n×nn \times n matrices, with MM positive definite, and consider the linear system of small oscillations Mx¨+Kx=0,x ⁣:ℝ→ℝn.M \ddot x + K x = 0, \qquad x \colon \R \to \R^n. A normal mode of the system is a solution of the form x(t)=Acos⁡(ωt+φ) v,x(t) = A \cos(\omega t + \varphi) \, v, with a vector v∈ℝn∖{0}v \in \R^n \setminus \set{0}, the mode shape, and constants A>0A > 0, ω>0\omega > 0, φ∈ℝ\varphi \in \R. The number ω\omega is the natural frequency of the mode.

Remarks

The function x(t)=Acos⁡(ωt+φ)vx(t) = A \cos(\omega t + \varphi) v is a solution if and only if Kv=ω2MvK v = \omega^2 M v, so the mode shapes and the squared natural frequencies are the generalized eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the pair (K,M)(K, M). Each coordinate of a normal mode is a simple harmonic motion or is identically zero. If KK is positive definite, there are nn natural frequencies 0<ω1≤⋯≤ωn0 < \omega_1 \le \cdots \le \omega_n, counted with multiplicity, with mode shapes v1,…,vnv_1, \ldots, v_n that form a basis of ℝn\R^n and satisfy viTMvj=0v_i^T M v_j = 0 for i≠ji \ne j.

Example: two unit masses joined to walls and to each other by three springs of stiffness 11: M=I2M = I_2 and K=(2−1−12)K = \begin{pmatrix} 2 & -1 \\ -1 & 2 \end{pmatrix}. For v=(1,1)v = (1, 1), Kv=vK v = v, so ω=1\omega = 1; for v=(1,−1)v = (1, -1), Kv=3vK v = 3v, so ω=3\omega = \sqrt 3.

Non-example: in the same system, x(t)=cos⁡(t) (1,0)x(t) = \cos(t) \, (1, 0) is not a normal mode, since K(1,0)T=(2,−1)TK (1, 0)^T = (2, -1)^T is not a multiple of (1,0)T(1, 0)^T, so it is not even a solution.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
