Proof that the product of countable sets is countable
Builds on Countable setCartesian productCantor pairing functionInjective functionComposition of injections is injective
Proof
- Let and be countable sets. By definition, there are injective functions and .
- Define on the Cartesian product by .
- The map is injective. If , then and . So and , since and are injective.
- Let be the Cantor pairing function, . It is a bijection, so it is injective.
- The composite is injective, as a composition of injections.
- Hence is countable.
Idea
Countable means "can be labelled by natural numbers without repeats". A pair gets a pair of labels, and the Cantor pairing function packs a pair of natural numbers into one natural number without collisions.
