Definition

Let (X,dX)(X, d_X) and (Y,dY)(Y, d_Y) be metric spaces. Let η ⁣:[0,∞)→[0,∞)\eta \colon [0, \infty) \to [0, \infty) be a homeomorphism. An injective map f ⁣:X→Yf \colon X \to Y is η\eta-quasisymmetric if dY(f(x),f(a))dY(f(x),f(b))≤η ⁣(dX(x,a)dX(x,b))\frac{d_Y(f(x), f(a))}{d_Y(f(x), f(b))} \le \eta\!\left( \frac{d_X(x, a)}{d_X(x, b)} \right) for all x,a,b∈Xx, a, b \in X with b≠xb \ne x. The map ff is quasisymmetric if it is η\eta-quasisymmetric for some such η\eta.

Remarks

Example: an LL-bi-Lipschitz map, with L−1dX(x,y)≤dY(f(x),f(y))≤L dX(x,y)L^{-1} d_X(x, y) \le d_Y(f(x), f(y)) \le L\, d_X(x, y), is η\eta-quasisymmetric with η(t)=L2t\eta(t) = L^2 t. Indeed the numerator is at most L dX(x,a)L\, d_X(x, a) and the denominator is at least L−1dX(x,b)L^{-1} d_X(x, b). A similarity is quasisymmetric with η(t)=t\eta(t) = t.

Non-example: f(x)=exf(x) = e^x on ℝ\R is not quasisymmetric. For s>0s > 0 take a=x+sa = x + s and b=x−sb = x - s; the ratio on the right is 11, while the ratio on the left is es−11−e−s=es\frac{e^s - 1}{1 - e^{-s}} = e^s. No single value η(1)\eta(1) can bound ese^s for all ss.

A quasisymmetric map is a topological embedding, and its inverse on f(X)f(X) is quasisymmetric too. An increasing homeomorphism hh of ℝ\R is quasisymmetric if and only if there is M≥1M \ge 1 with 1M≤h(x+t)−h(x)h(x)−h(x−t)≤M\frac{1}{M} \le \frac{h(x + t) - h(x)}{h(x) - h(x - t)} \le M for all x∈ℝx \in \R and t>0t > 0.
