Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring, and let m,n≥0m, n \ge 0 be integers with m+n≥1m + n \ge 1. Let f=amxm+⋯+a0f = a_m x^m + \dots + a_0 and g=bnxn+⋯+b0g = b_n x^n + \dots + b_0 be elements of R[x]R[x]. The Sylvester matrix S(f,g)S(f, g) is the (m+n)×(m+n)(m + n) \times (m + n) matrix whose rows are:

  1. for i=1,…,ni = 1, \dots, n, the row (am,am−1,…,a0)(a_m, a_{m-1}, \dots, a_0) preceded by i−1i - 1 zeros and filled up with zeros on the right;
  2. for j=1,…,mj = 1, \dots, m, the row (bn,bn−1,…,b0)(b_n, b_{n-1}, \dots, b_0) preceded by j−1j - 1 zeros and filled up with zeros on the right.

The resultant of ff and gg is Res⁡(f,g)=det⁡S(f,g)\operatorname{Res}(f, g) = \det S(f, g), the determinant of this matrix.

Remarks

Example: for f=x−af = x - a and g=x−bg = x - b, the matrix is (1−a1−b)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & -a \\ 1 & -b \end{pmatrix}, and Res⁡(f,g)=a−b\operatorname{Res}(f, g) = a - b. Let R=KR = K be a field with am≠0a_m \ne 0 and bn≠0b_n \ne 0, and let α1,…,αm\alpha_1, \dots, \alpha_m and β1,…,βn\beta_1, \dots, \beta_n be the roots of ff and gg in a splitting field of fgf g. Then Res⁡(f,g)=amn bnm∏i=1m∏j=1n(αi−βj).\operatorname{Res}(f, g) = a_m^n \, b_n^m \prod_{i=1}^{m} \prod_{j=1}^{n} (\alpha_i - \beta_j). So Res⁡(f,g)=0\operatorname{Res}(f, g) = 0 if and only if ff and gg have a common root, if and only if they have a common factor of positive degree. For instance, Res⁡(x2−1,x−1)=0\operatorname{Res}(x^2 - 1, x - 1) = 0, because of the common root 11. The value depends on the chosen formal degrees mm and nn: if am=bn=0a_m = b_n = 0, the first column is zero and the resultant is 00 even without a common root. For ff of degree nn with leading coefficient ana_n, Res⁡(f,f′)=(−1)n(n−1)/2anDisc⁡(f)\operatorname{Res}(f, f') = (-1)^{n(n-1)/2} a_n \operatorname{Disc}(f), where Disc⁡\operatorname{Disc} is the discriminant.
