Definition

Let n,k≥1n, k \ge 1, let q=(q1,…,qn)q = (q_1, \ldots, q_n) and s=(s1,…,sk)s = (s_1, \ldots, s_k) be generalized coordinates, and let L(q,s,q˙,s˙,t)L(q, s, \dot q, \dot s, t) be a Lagrangian of class C2C^2. Assume that each sjs_j is a cyclic coordinate, that is, ∂L/∂sj=0\partial L / \partial s_j = 0, so that L=L(q,q˙,s˙,t)L = L(q, \dot q, \dot s, t). Let pj=∂L/∂s˙jp_j = \partial L / \partial \dot s_j for j=1,…,kj = 1, \ldots, k. Assume that for fixed (q,q˙,t)(q, \dot q, t) the map s˙↦p\dot s \mapsto p is invertible, with inverse s˙=u(q,q˙,p,t)\dot s = u(q, \dot q, p, t) of class C1C^1. The Routhian is the function R(q,q˙,p,t)=∑j=1kpj uj(q,q˙,p,t)−L(q,q˙,u(q,q˙,p,t),t).R(q, \dot q, p, t) = \sum_{j=1}^k p_j \, u_j(q, \dot q, p, t) - L\big(q, \dot q, u(q, \dot q, p, t), t\big). Routhian mechanics describes the motion by the Lagrange equations of RR in the variables qq, with pp held constant: ddt∂R∂q˙i−∂R∂qi=0,i=1,…,n,\frac{d}{dt} \frac{\partial R}{\partial \dot q_i} - \frac{\partial R}{\partial q_i} = 0, \qquad i = 1, \ldots, n, together with p˙j=0\dot p_j = 0 and s˙j=∂R/∂pj\dot s_j = \partial R / \partial p_j.

Remarks

Since RR is a partial Legendre transform of LL in s˙\dot s only, ∂R/∂qi=−∂L/∂qi\partial R / \partial q_i = -\partial L / \partial q_i and ∂R/∂q˙i=−∂L/∂q˙i\partial R / \partial \dot q_i = -\partial L / \partial \dot q_i, so the equations for qq are the Lagrange equations of LL. Some authors use the opposite sign, R=L−∑jpjs˙jR = L - \sum_j p_j \dot s_j; the equations of motion for qq do not change.

Example: a particle of mass mm in the plane with a central potential, L=12m(r˙2+r2φ˙2)−V(r)L = \frac{1}{2} m (\dot r^2 + r^2 \dot \varphi^2) - V(r). The angle φ\varphi is cyclic, p=mr2φ˙p = m r^2 \dot \varphi, and R=p22mr2−12mr˙2+V(r).R = \frac{p^2}{2 m r^2} - \frac{1}{2} m \dot r^2 + V(r). The Lagrange equation of RR in rr is mr¨=p2/(mr3)−V′(r)m \ddot r = p^2/(m r^3) - V'(r), a problem with one degree of freedom.

Non-example: for L=12s˙2−12s2L = \frac{1}{2} \dot s^2 - \frac{1}{2} s^2 the coordinate ss is not cyclic, since ∂L/∂s=−s≠0\partial L / \partial s = -s \ne 0, so its momentum s˙\dot s is not conserved and cannot be treated as a constant.
