Separable degree

Builds on Algebraic extensionAlgebraically closed fieldField homomorphismDegree of a field extension

Definition

Let L/KL/K be an algebraic extension. Let Ω\Omega be an algebraically closed field and let σ ⁣:K→Ω\sigma \colon K \to \Omega be a field homomorphism. The separable degree [L:K]s[L:K]_s of L/KL/K is the cardinality of the set of field homomorphisms τ ⁣:L→Ω\tau \colon L \to \Omega with τ∣K=σ\tau|_K = \sigma. This cardinality does not depend on the choice of Ω\Omega and σ\sigma.

Remarks

Let L/KL/K be finite. Then [L:K]s[L:K]_s divides the degree [L:K][L:K]. If KK has characteristic p>0p > 0, the quotient [L:K]i=[L:K]/[L:K]s[L:K]_i = [L:K] / [L:K]_s is a power of pp, called the inseparable degree; in characteristic 00 it is 11. The extension L/KL/K is separable if and only if [L:K]s=[L:K][L:K]_s = [L:K]. Separable degree is multiplicative in towers: [M:K]s=[M:L]s[L:K]s[M:K]_s = [M:L]_s [L:K]_s. It equals the degree over KK of the separable closure of KK in LL.

Example: L=ℚ(2)L = \Q(\sqrt{2}) over ℚ\Q with Ω=ℂ\Omega = \C. Check: an embedding is determined by the image of 2\sqrt{2}, which must be a root of x2−2x^2 - 2, so there are exactly 22 embeddings and [L:ℚ]s=2=[L:ℚ][L:\Q]_s = 2 = [L:\Q].

Non-example of the equality [L:K]s=[L:K][L:K]_s = [L:K]: let K=𝔽p(t)K = \F_p(t) and L=K(s)L = K(s) with sp=ts^p = t. Over an algebraic closure, xp−t=(x−s)px^p - t = (x - s)^p has one root, so [L:K]s=1[L:K]_s = 1 while [L:K]=p[L:K] = p.
