Strain rate tensor

Definition
Let be open and let be a continuously differentiable velocity field. Let be its velocity gradient, the Jacobian matrix with entries . The strain rate tensor of is the symmetric matrix field
Remarks
The remaining part is the spin tensor, and , where is the vorticity and is the Levi-Civita symbol. The trace of is the divergence . Example: for the shear flow , has the single nonzero entry , so and all other entries of are . Non-example: the velocity gradient of this shear flow is not the strain rate tensor, since is not symmetric. A rigid motion has . It is a tensor field of rank two; other names are rate-of-strain tensor and rate-of-deformation tensor.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
