Definition

Let WW be a finite-dimensional real symplectic vector space with symplectic group Sp(W)\mathrm{Sp}(W) and metaplectic group p ⁣:Mp(W)→Sp(W)p \colon \mathrm{Mp}(W) \to \mathrm{Sp}(W). A reductive dual pair in Sp(W)\mathrm{Sp}(W) is a pair (G,G′)(G, G') of reductive subgroups of Sp(W)\mathrm{Sp}(W) with two properties. The centralizer of G′G' in Sp(W)\mathrm{Sp}(W) is GG, and the centralizer of GG is G′G'. Let G~=p−1(G)\tilde G = p^{-1}(G) and G~′=p−1(G′)\tilde G' = p^{-1}(G'), and let ω∞\omega^\infty be the space of smooth vectors of the oscillator representation of Mp(W)\mathrm{Mp}(W), as a representation of G~×G~′\tilde G \times \tilde G'. Let ℛ(G~)\mathcal R(\tilde G) be the set of classes of irreducible admissible representations π\pi of G~\tilde G that occur as quotients of ω∞\omega^\infty. Define ℛ(G~′)\mathcal R(\tilde G') in the same way. By Howe duality, for each π∈ℛ(G~)\pi \in \mathcal R(\tilde G) there is exactly one π′∈ℛ(G~′)\pi' \in \mathcal R(\tilde G') such that π⊗π′\pi \otimes \pi' is a quotient of ω∞\omega^\infty, and π↦π′\pi \mapsto \pi' is a bijection ℛ(G~)→ℛ(G~′)\mathcal R(\tilde G) \to \mathcal R(\tilde G'). This bijection is the theta correspondence for the pair (G,G′)(G, G'), written π′=θ(π)\pi' = \theta(\pi).

Remarks

The theorem used in the definition is Howe's duality theorem for real groups; the same definition over pp-adic fields rests on the work of several later authors.

Example: let W=ℝ2W = \R^2, so Sp(W)=SL2(ℝ)\mathrm{Sp}(W) = \mathrm{SL}_2(\R), and let G={±1}G = \set{\pm 1}, which is the orthogonal group O(1)\mathrm{O}(1). The centralizer of {±1}\set{\pm 1} is all of SL2(ℝ)\mathrm{SL}_2(\R), and the centralizer of SL2(ℝ)\mathrm{SL}_2(\R) is its center {±1}\set{\pm 1}, so (O(1),SL2(ℝ))(\mathrm{O}(1), \mathrm{SL}_2(\R)) is a dual pair. In the Schrödinger model on L2(ℝ)L^2(\R), the element −1-1 acts by ψ(x)↦ψ(−x)\psi(x) \mapsto \psi(-x), up to a constant depending on the lift. So the two characters of O(1)\mathrm{O}(1) correspond to the two irreducible pieces of the oscillator representation of Mp2(ℝ)\mathrm{Mp}_2(\R), on even and on odd functions.

Non-example: in SL2(ℝ)\mathrm{SL}_2(\R), let A={diag⁡(a,a−1):a>0}A = \set{\operatorname{diag}(a, a^{-1}) : a > 0}. The centralizer of AA is {diag⁡(a,a−1):a≠0}\set{\operatorname{diag}(a, a^{-1}) : a \ne 0}, which is larger than AA, so (A,A)(A, A) is not a dual pair.

The standard dual pairs include (O(p,q),Sp2m(ℝ))(\mathrm{O}(p, q), \mathrm{Sp}_{2m}(\R)) in Sp(ℝp+q⊗ℝ2m)\mathrm{Sp}(\R^{p+q} \otimes \R^{2m}) and (U(p,q),U(r,s))(\mathrm{U}(p, q), \mathrm{U}(r, s)).
