Vaught conjecture

Builds on Complete theoryModelCountable setAleph-null

Statement

Let TT be a complete theory in a countable first-order signature. Let I(T,ℵ0)I(T, \aleph_0) be the number of countable models of TT up to isomorphism. Then I(T,ℵ0)I(T, \aleph_0) is finite, or equal to ℵ0\aleph_0, or equal to 2ℵ02^{\aleph_0}.

Remarks

The conjecture is open. Morley proved in 1970 that I(T,ℵ0)I(T, \aleph_0) is at most ℵ1\aleph_1 or equal to 2ℵ02^{\aleph_0}. So the conjecture holds under the continuum hypothesis, and the open question is whether a theory can have exactly ℵ1\aleph_1 countable models when ℵ1<2ℵ0\aleph_1 < 2^{\aleph_0}. Shelah, Harrington and Makkai proved the conjecture for ω\omega-stable theories. Vaught himself proved that I(T,ℵ0)I(T, \aleph_0) is never equal to 22.

All the allowed values occur. The theory of dense linear orders without endpoints has exactly one countable model. The theory of algebraically closed fields of characteristic 00 has ℵ0\aleph_0 countable models, one for each transcendence degree 0,1,2,…,ℵ00, 1, 2, \dots, \aleph_0. The complete theory of (ℤ,<)(\Z, <) has 2ℵ02^{\aleph_0} countable models.
