Wirtinger's inequality for functions
Builds on Periodic functionContinuously differentiable functionRiemann integral
Statement
Let be a continuously differentiable function that is periodic with period and satisfies . Then with equality if and only if for some real numbers .
Remarks
Proof idea: expand in its Fourier series . The mean zero condition gives , and has coefficients . By Parseval's identity the two sides are and , and with equality only for .
The mean zero condition is needed: the constant function gives , which is false.
A related form holds on an interval with zero boundary values: if is continuously differentiable with , then .

For a student
This is the simplest Poincaré-type inequality, and the constant is the smallest nonzero eigenvalue of on the circle of length . It gives a short proof of the isoperimetric inequality in the plane, by applying it to the coordinates of a closed curve parametrized by arc length.
