Algebra of limits

To find the limit of (2n+1)/(n+3)(2n + 1)/(n + 3), divide the numerator and the denominator by nn to get (2+1/n)/(1+3/n)(2 + 1/n)/(1 + 3/n). Since 1/n→01/n \to 0, the rules give the limit (2+0)/(1+0)=2(2 + 0)/(1 + 0) = 2.

Fermat's little theorem

Take p=5p = 5 and a=2a = 2: 24=16=3⋅5+12^4 = 16 = 3 \cdot 5 + 1, so 24≡1(mod5)2^4 \equiv 1 \pmod 5. The theorem says that this always happens for a prime pp and a number aa that pp does not divide. It lets you reduce large powers: 2100=(24)25≡1(mod5)2^{100} = (2^4)^{25} \equiv 1 \pmod 5.

Binet's formula

Fibonacci numbers are integers, but this formula uses 5\sqrt{5}, and the irrational parts cancel. The term with ψn\psi^n is very small, so FnF_n is close to φn/5\varphi^n / \sqrt{5}.

Bertrand's postulate

Between each number and its double, there is always at least one prime. So the gap after a prime pp to the next prime is always smaller than pp.

Negation

Negation is the logical operation that changes a proposition into its opposite. The negation of a true proposition is false, and the negation of a false proposition is true.

Image of a homomorphism

The image of a group homomorphism φ ⁣:G→H\varphi \colon G \to H is the set of the values φ(g)\varphi(g) for g∈Gg \in G. It is a subgroup of HH.
