Definition

Let ℓ∞\ell^\infty be the vector space of bounded real sequences x=(xn)n≥1x = (x_n)_{n \ge 1}, as in the spaces ℓ^p. Let S ⁣:ℓ∞→ℓ∞S \colon \ell^\infty \to \ell^\infty be the shift, S(x1,x2,x3,… )=(x2,x3,… )S(x_1, x_2, x_3, \dots) = (x_2, x_3, \dots), and let 𝟏=(1,1,1,… )\mathbf{1} = (1, 1, 1, \dots). A Banach limit is a linear map φ ⁣:ℓ∞→ℝ\varphi \colon \ell^\infty \to \R such that:

  1. φ(x)≥0\varphi(x) \ge 0 for every xx with xn≥0x_n \ge 0 for all nn.
  2. φ(Sx)=φ(x)\varphi(Sx) = \varphi(x) for every x∈ℓ∞x \in \ell^\infty.
  3. φ(𝟏)=1\varphi(\mathbf{1}) = 1.

Remarks

Every Banach limit satisfies lim inf⁡nxn≤φ(x)≤lim sup⁡nxn\liminf_n x_n \le \varphi(x) \le \limsup_n x_n. Check of the left inequality: if xn≥cx_n \ge c for all n≥Nn \ge N, then SNx−c𝟏S^N x - c \mathbf{1} has nonnegative terms, so φ(x)=φ(SNx)≥c\varphi(x) = \varphi(S^N x) \ge c. Hence φ(x)=lim⁡nxn\varphi(x) = \lim_n x_n for every convergent xx, and ∣φ(x)∣≤sup⁡n∣xn∣\abs{\varphi(x)} \le \sup_n \abs{x_n}, so φ\varphi is continuous of norm 11. Banach limits exist by the Hahn–Banach theorem, applied to the sublinear functional p(x)=lim sup⁡m1m∑k=1mxkp(x) = \limsup_{m} \frac{1}{m} \sum_{k=1}^{m} x_k or a similar one.

Non-example: φ(x)=lim sup⁡nxn\varphi(x) = \limsup_n x_n satisfies clauses 1, 2 and 3, but it is not linear. For x=(1,0,1,0,… )x = (1, 0, 1, 0, \dots) and y=Sxy = Sx one has φ(x)+φ(y)=2\varphi(x) + \varphi(y) = 2 but φ(x+y)=φ(𝟏)=1\varphi(x + y) = \varphi(\mathbf{1}) = 1.

Non-example: φ(x)=x1\varphi(x) = x_1 is linear and positive with φ(𝟏)=1\varphi(\mathbf{1}) = 1, but it fails clause 2.
