Description
Identify with the quaternions , writing and for the conjugate. Identify with the unit quaternions, so that its Lie algebra is the space of imaginary quaternions. Fix a centre and a scale . The BPST instanton is the connection on the trivial -bundle over given by the -valued -form Its curvature is
Remarks
Check that it is an instanton: expanding in coordinates, the -component of is , and the - and -components are and . Each of these -forms is anti-self-dual for the Hodge star of the orientation , since and so on. So .
The curvature decays like , so the Yang–Mills action is finite. By conformal invariance the connection extends to a bundle over the sphere , and the instanton number of that bundle has absolute value . Up to gauge transformations, the parameters describe all anti-self-dual connections of instanton number for this orientation. The moduli space of these connections over is an open -dimensional ball. The scale measures the size of the region where the curvature is concentrated; as the curvature concentrates at the point .
Belavin, Polyakov, Schwartz and Tyupkin found this solution in 1975, and the name is formed from their initials. In quantum field theory it describes tunnelling between vacua of Yang–Mills theory in Euclidean time.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
