Branched covering

Builds on Riemann surfaceHolomorphic map between Riemann surfacesCompact setBranch point

Definition

Let XX and YY be Riemann surfaces. A map f ⁣:X→Yf \colon X \to Y is a (holomorphic) branched covering if:

  1. ff is a holomorphic map that is not constant, and
  2. ff is proper, that is, f−1(K)f^{-1}(K) is compact for every compact K⊆YK \subseteq Y.

A point x∈Xx \in X is a ramification point of ff if ff is not injective on any neighbourhood of xx; its image is a branch point.

Remarks

Every branched covering ff is surjective, and its ramification points form a closed discrete set R⊆XR \subseteq X. There is an integer d≥1d \ge 1, the degree, such that ff restricts to a dd-sheeted covering map from X∖f−1(f(R))X \setminus f^{-1}(f(R)) onto Y∖f(R)Y \setminus f(R). Every fibre has exactly dd points when counted with multiplicity, where the multiplicity at xx is the kk such that ff looks like z↦zkz \mapsto z^k near xx in suitable charts. If XX is compact, every non-constant holomorphic map X→YX \to Y is a branched covering. In topology, a branched covering of surfaces is defined in the same way with continuous maps that look locally like z↦zkz \mapsto z^k.

Example: f ⁣:ℂ→ℂf \colon \C \to \C, f(z)=z2f(z) = z^2. It is holomorphic and non-constant, and f−1(K)f^{-1}(K) is closed and bounded for compact KK, since ∣z∣2=∣f(z)∣\abs{z}^2 = \abs{f(z)}. Its degree is 22, its only ramification point is 00, and the only branch point is 00.

Non-example: exp⁡ ⁣:ℂ→ℂ\exp \colon \C \to \C is holomorphic and non-constant but not proper. The preimage of the compact set {1}\set{1} is 2πiℤ2\pi i \Z, which is not compact; clause 2 fails.
