Definition
Let be a partially ordered set. A subset is cofinal in if for each there is with . Let be an ordinal, ordered by . The cofinality of is the least ordinal such that has a cofinal subset of order type .
Remarks
Equivalently, is the least for which there is a function whose range is cofinal in . Example: . Check: the set has order type and is cofinal in , and no finite subset of a limit ordinal is cofinal. Non-example of a cofinal subset: a finite subset of is not cofinal, since has no element of above it. For a successor ordinal , the set is cofinal, so , and . Always , and the cofinality of a limit ordinal is a regular cardinal. In ZFC, König's theorem gives for each infinite cardinal .
