Stationary set

Builds on Club setRegular cardinal

Definition

Let κ\kappa be an uncountable regular cardinal, and let S⊆κS \subseteq \kappa. The set SS is stationary in κ\kappa if S∩C≠∅S \cap C \ne \varnothing for each club set CC in κ\kappa.

Remarks

Example: each club set DD in κ\kappa is stationary. Check: for each club CC, the intersection C∩DC \cap D is club, hence unbounded, hence nonempty. Example: the set {α<ω2:cf⁡(α)=ω}\set{\alpha < \omega_2 : \operatorname{cf}(\alpha) = \omega} is stationary in ω2\omega_2. Check: each club CC in ω2\omega_2 contains the supremum of its first ω\omega elements, and this supremum has cofinality ω\omega. Non-example: a bounded set S⊆κS \subseteq \kappa, with S⊆βS \subseteq \beta for some β<κ\beta < \kappa, misses the club set {α:β≤α<κ}\set{\alpha : \beta \le \alpha < \kappa}. The sets that are not stationary form a κ\kappa-complete ideal, the nonstationary ideal; it is closed under diagonal unions. The same definition is used for a limit ordinal of uncountable cofinality in place of κ\kappa. By a theorem of Solovay, each stationary subset of κ\kappa is the union of κ\kappa pairwise disjoint stationary sets.
