Definition

Let κ\kappa be a limit ordinal of uncountable cofinality, and let C⊆κC \subseteq \kappa. The set CC is a club set in κ\kappa if both conditions hold:

  1. CC is closed: for each nonzero limit ordinal α<κ\alpha < \kappa, if sup⁡(C∩α)=α\sup(C \cap \alpha) = \alpha, then α∈C\alpha \in C.
  2. CC is unbounded: for each β<κ\beta < \kappa there is γ∈C\gamma \in C with γ≥β\gamma \ge \beta.

Here sup⁡\sup is the supremum of a set of ordinals.

Remarks

Example: the set CC of limit ordinals below ω1\omega_1 is club in ω1\omega_1. It is unbounded, since β+ω∈C\beta + \omega \in C for each β<ω1\beta < \omega_1. It is closed, since a limit of limit ordinals is a limit ordinal. Non-example: the set of successor ordinals below ω1\omega_1 is unbounded but not closed. Indeed the successor ordinals below ω\omega have supremum ω\omega, which is not a successor. Condition 1 says that CC is closed in the order topology of κ\kappa. If κ\kappa is a regular uncountable cardinal, the intersection of fewer than κ\kappa club sets in κ\kappa is club. For such κ\kappa, the diagonal intersection {α<κ:α∈⋂ξ<αCξ}\set{\alpha < \kappa : \alpha \in \bigcap_{\xi < \alpha} C_\xi} of a sequence (Cξ)ξ<κ(C_\xi)_{\xi < \kappa} of club sets is club. For such κ\kappa, the range of a normal function from κ\kappa to κ\kappa is club, and so is its set of fixed points.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)
