Normal function
Builds on Ordinal numberSupremumOrdinal arithmetic
Definition
Let be a function from the class of ordinals to the class of ordinals. The function is normal if it satisfies both conditions:
- is strictly increasing: implies .
- is continuous: for each nonzero limit ordinal , , the supremum of the earlier values.
Remarks
Example: with ordinal arithmetic, is normal. It is strictly increasing, and holds by the definition of addition at limits. Non-example: is strictly increasing but not continuous. Indeed , while . Other normal functions are and . A strictly increasing always satisfies . Fixed-point lemma: for each normal and each ordinal , there is an ordinal with . The fixed points form a closed unbounded class, and the function that lists them in increasing order is again normal. The same definition is used for functions from a limit ordinal to itself, or from a regular cardinal to itself.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
