Definition

The functions φγ\varphi_\gamma, for ordinals γ\gamma, map ordinals to ordinals. They are defined by transfinite recursion on γ\gamma:

  1. φ0(α)=ωα\varphi_0(\alpha) = \omega^\alpha, with ordinal exponentiation from ordinal arithmetic.
  2. φγ+1\varphi_{\gamma + 1} lists in increasing order the fixed points of φγ\varphi_\gamma, the ordinals α\alpha with φγ(α)=α\varphi_\gamma(\alpha) = \alpha.
  3. For a nonzero limit ordinal γ\gamma, φγ\varphi_\gamma lists in increasing order the common fixed points of all φδ\varphi_\delta with δ<γ\delta < \gamma.

The two-variable function (γ,α)↦φγ(α)(\gamma, \alpha) \mapsto \varphi_\gamma(\alpha), also written φ(γ,α)\varphi(\gamma, \alpha), is the Veblen function.

Remarks

Each φγ\varphi_\gamma is a normal function, and this makes clauses 2 and 3 meaningful, since the fixed points of normal functions form a closed unbounded class. Example: φ1(α)=εα\varphi_1(\alpha) = \varepsilon_\alpha, the α\alpha-th epsilon number, so φ1(0)=ε0\varphi_1(0) = \varepsilon_0 is the least α\alpha with ωα=α\omega^\alpha = \alpha. Check: φ1\varphi_1 lists the fixed points of φ0\varphi_0, and these are by definition the epsilon numbers. Non-example: the function α↦ωα+1\alpha \mapsto \omega^\alpha + 1 cannot start the hierarchy, since it is not normal and has no fixed points. The least ordinal α\alpha with φα(0)=α\varphi_\alpha(0) = \alpha is the Feferman–Schütte ordinal Γ0\Gamma_0. More generally, one may start from any normal function ff in place of α↦ωα\alpha \mapsto \omega^\alpha.
