Definition

Let AA be a Krull domain with field of fractions KK, and let XX be the set of prime ideals of AA of height one. For P∈XP \in X, the localization APA_P is a discrete valuation ring; let vP ⁣:K×→ℤv_P \colon K^\times \to \Z be its valuation.

  1. The divisor group Div⁡(A)\operatorname{Div}(A) is the free abelian group on the set XX.
  2. For x∈K×x \in K^\times, the principal divisor of xx is div⁡(x)=∑P∈XvP(x)P\operatorname{div}(x) = \sum_{P \in X} v_P(x) P; the sum is finite because AA is a Krull domain.
  3. The map x↦div⁡(x)x \mapsto \operatorname{div}(x) is a group homomorphism K×→Div⁡(A)K^\times \to \operatorname{Div}(A); its image is the subgroup Prin⁡(A)\operatorname{Prin}(A) of principal divisors.
  4. The divisor class group of AA is the quotient group Cl⁡(A)=Div⁡(A)/Prin⁡(A)\operatorname{Cl}(A) = \operatorname{Div}(A)/\operatorname{Prin}(A).

Remarks

Cl⁡(A)=0\operatorname{Cl}(A) = 0 if and only if AA is a unique factorisation domain. Example: for A=ℤA = \Z, the height-one primes are pℤp\Z, and the divisor ∑np pℤ\sum n_p \, p\Z is div⁡(∏pnp)\operatorname{div}\left(\prod p^{n_p}\right), so every divisor is principal and Cl⁡(ℤ)=0\operatorname{Cl}(\Z) = 0. Non-example of a principal divisor: in A=ℤ[−5]A = \Z[\sqrt{-5}], the divisor PP with P=(2,1+−5)P = (2, 1 + \sqrt{-5}) is not principal, since no element of AA has norm 22; but 2P=div⁡(2)2P = \operatorname{div}(2), because P2=(2)P^2 = (2). For a Dedekind domain, Cl⁡(A)\operatorname{Cl}(A) is the ideal class group, the group of nonzero fractional ideals modulo principal ones. The notation Cl⁡(A)\operatorname{Cl}(A) is standard.
