Fourier analysis on the Boolean cube
Builds on Boolean functionCharacter of an abelian groupCharacters of a finite abelian group form a basisWalsh–Hadamard transform
Definition
Let , and let be the Boolean cube, a group under coordinatewise multiplication, isomorphic to . For a subset , the parity function is , with . For a function , its Fourier coefficient at is The Fourier expansion of is .
Remarks
The parity functions are exactly the characters of the group , and they form an orthonormal basis for , by the basis theorem for characters. So the expansion holds and is unique, and Parseval's identity holds. Up to the factor and a change from to , the vector of coefficients is the Walsh–Hadamard transform of the table of values of .
Example: for majority on three inputs, . Check: at the right side is ; at it is ; at it is ; the other points follow by symmetry and by .
Non-example: the polynomial is not multilinear, so it is not a Fourier expansion in this sense. On the cube , so as a function it equals ; the expansion is unique only among multilinear polynomials.
The degree of is the largest with , and the influence of coordinate on with values in is .
