Statement
Let be a finite abelian group with identity , and let be its character group.
- For every , equals if is the trivial character and otherwise.
- For every , equals if and otherwise.
- For , equals if and otherwise.
Remarks
Proof idea for 1: if is nontrivial, pick with . Since is a bijection of , the sum satisfies , so . Statement 3 is 1 applied to , since on the unit circle. Statement 2 is proved in the same way as 1, once one knows that for some character has ; this follows from the classification of finite abelian groups.
Example: for and the character , the sum is .
Statement 2 needs abelian. For , the only homomorphisms to are the trivial character and the sign. At a -cycle both take the value , so the sum is instead of .

These relations are the finite abelian case of the Schur orthogonality relations. They are the engine of discrete Fourier analysis: the inversion formula for the Fourier transform on is a direct consequence. In number theory, the version for Dirichlet characters modulo is used to pick out an arithmetic progression, as in the proof of Dirichlet's theorem on primes in progressions.
